The Best Time of Year to Travel and Enjoy Lanzarote

Back
The best time of year to travel to Lanzarote is from September to November. During these autumn months, the island's three best conditions come together: the sea reaches its warmest temperature (around 23 °C), the intense summer trade winds decrease substantially, and tourist crowds are much smaller.
Due to its subtropical climate, Lanzarote is an ideal destination all year round, but the perfect time varies depending on what you are looking for:
According to your travel plans:
  • To enjoy beaches and diving (September and October): This is the star season. The ocean water is at its warmest, the wind takes a break, and accommodation prices drop compared to summer.
  • For hiking and exploring volcanoes (March to May): Spring offers very pleasant daytime temperatures (between 20 °C and 24 °C). It is the perfect time to walk through the Timanfaya National Park or tour the vineyards of La Geria without suffering from suffocating heat.
  • For surfers (November to February): Winter brings the best groundswells and powerful waves to iconic areas such as Famara beach.
  • To escape extreme cold (December to February): The European winter turns the Canary Islands into a refuge. You will find clear days with highs around 21 °C, ideal for disconnecting, although the sea temperature drops to about 18 °C.
Climate and crowding factors to consider:
The wind: July is historically the windiest month of the year due to the trade winds. If you are looking for beaches in total calm, avoid it or focus on the sheltered coves in the south, such as those in Playa Blanca.
Prices and crowds: The high season for occupancy and rates occurs in July and August (summer holidays), as well as Christmas, New Year's Eve, and Easter. If you want to save money and enjoy peace, the real low season is experienced after Easter (May/June) and throughout the autumn.
